Meraki Cloud-Managed Wireless Assists with Internal Manageability
Peterbilt of Springfield, MO, serves as a local seller to truck and tractor dealerships. Their team manages all of the IT for 20 branches from Arkansas to Ohio, with more than 700 employees throughout the organization. After experiencing a rapid growth in size, the company saw a need to update their wireless solution utilized by over 650 laptops and mobile devices for all locations.
Peterbilt was interested in a cloud-based wireless system, since it offered the appeal of minimal hardware. Based on these terms, the local AOS team suggested a Cisco Meraki solution. After viewing an online demonstration of the dashboard feature and detailed informational videos on the Meraki website, the CFO for their office was able to easily understand the solution and approve the project.
Once they decided to move forward with the Meraki system, Peterbilt received their first shipment of APs and, within less than two hours, had replaced three APs in their main facility.
“The fact that we didn’t have to invest in a lot of hardware and the ease of the rollout was great,” said Ismael Hernandez, Director of Technology. “The ability to configure the device at the main facility, ship the AP to another location, plug in and have it be active was another.”
One key to the success of the project was manageability. In the past, there had been issues with the wireless phones dropping calls or having poor service in certain areas. The Meraki solution has solved this problem, and now the sales team is better able to serve customers. Another added benefit for Peterbilt was the ability to easily monitor accessibility to the wireless server.
“In the past we had a problem with our sales team disconnecting from the employee wireless and reconnecting to the guest wireless in order to access blocked websites,” said Hernandez. “We can now identify if a company PC is on the guest server and blacklist their device. The ability to track productivity with mobile devices is great. We are able to restrict certain things based on bandwidth.”
Overall, the simplicity of the dashboard feature, ability to manage multiple wireless accounts, and ease of connecting several locations benefited Peterbilt in offering service to its customers. AOS has been the sole integrator for IT services with Peterbilt for more than eight years, and the relationship continues to grow. Partnering on multiple projects, it is the goal for customers to “expect the best.”
